What is the Philoptochos?

The Philoptochos is the second largest women’s charity organization in the world. We are the official charity arm of the Orthodox Church.

What is the History of the Philoptochos?

Philoptochos, established in 1931 by the late Patriarch Athenagoras 1, means “Friend of the Poor.”

There are nine dioceses which comprise the National Philoptochos organization. The St. Anthony’s Philoptochos is a part of the San Francisco Diocese. On this level, Philoptochos serves as the liaison between the national organization and local chapters. Philoptochos is volunteer driven and initiates or supports many church activities and charitable projects. Philoptochos Society # 4038 of St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church, Reno, Nevada embodies the principles of a Christian ministry while offering support, assistance and encouragement to all in need.

Special Event

October Rummage Sale

Start saving your clean clothes, kitchen items, jewelry, mens and childrens items, books and etc., along with hangers and bags for our October Rummage Sale. The proceeds from the sale will go to BASEF - Bishop Anthony Scholarship Endowment Fund. This money goes to the new priests in our metropolis. We have a shortage of new priests, and we want the new ones to start off not being in debt for their schooling. The Philoptochos thanks everyone in advance for their participation to make this the best Rummage Sale yet.
