The question we’ve been asked for the upcoming (Sept. 2) edition of RGJ’s (Reno Gazette Journal) Faith Forum is, “How can we build the moral foundation of our children?” My response is below. Remember you can read the entire column that includes responses from different religious traditions in this Sunday’s paper. -Fr. Stephen
Gregory of Nyssa says, “From the home comes grace,” i.e., God’s blessings begin from family. Children will imitate your example, so talk to them about God. Go to church and be on time, your children will follow your example. Fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ, avoiding idle talk and especially gossip. Take care with whom you keep company. Work and support your church, be involved, offer your talents and volunteer. Show your children that you love them. Spend time with them calmly discussing their life and the moral issues that occupy them. Teach them to have the fear of God. Pray together, especially at mealtimes. Let them see you study the holy scripture or the life of a Saint. Follow the fasts of the Church throughout the year. Go to confession and tell them “sorry,” when you’re at fault. Be honest. Your children will follow your example.
